FSSAI is an abbreviation used for food safety and standards Authority of India. Every Food Business Operator in the country is required to be approved under the Food Safety &Standards Authority of India. This step is taken by governmentâ€™s food licensing & registration system to ensure that food products undergo certain quality checks, thereby reducing the instances of adulteration, substandard products and improve accountability of manufacturers by issuing food service license. FSSAI online registration is done through official website of FSSAI for basic and central level. For state, the FSSAI registration is also done through online mode.

FSSAI Registration is required for all petty food business Operator. Petty food business Operator is any person or entity who:

A) Manufactures or sells any article of food himself or a petty retailer, hawker, itinerant vendor or temporary stall holder; or
B) Distributes food including in any religious or social gathering except a caterer: or
C) Other food businesses including small scale or cottage or such other industries relating to food business or tiny food businesses with an annual turnover not exceeding Rs 12 lakhs and whose:

Production capacity of food (other than milk and milk products and meat and meat products) does not exceed 100 kg/ltr per day or
Procurement or handling and collection of milk is up to 500 litres of milk per day or
Slaughtering capacity is 2 large animals or 10 small animals or 50 poultry birds per day or less.

FSSAI Registration is a 14-digit registration or a license number that is printed on all the food packages. The 14-digit registration number gives details about the assembling state and producerâ€™s permit. This registration procedure is aimed to create more accountability on the FBO to maintain the quality of the food products. The licensing and registration procedure and requirements are regulated by Food Safety & Standards (Licensing and Registration of Food Business) Regulations, 2011.

Procedures

Procedure of FSSAI Registration

Every petty Food Business Operator shall register themselves with the Registering Authority by submitting an application along with a fee. Filing of an Application in Form A
Unique Application Reference Number.
Registering Authority (RA) may grant or reject registration, with reasons to be recorded in writing within 7 days of receipt of an application for registration.
Inspection is ordered within 7 days.
Inspection is done within 30 days.
Registration granted FBO may start the business.
